End the Demand is a Michigan Abolitionist Project (MAP) initiative to combat human trafficking by reducing the demand that fuels it.
The initiative has three specific objectives:
1. ADDRESS PORNOGRAPHY
Independent, peer-reviewed research has proven time and time again that the use of pornography is identical to the use of hard drugs, in terms of how it affects the human brain. This strikingly addictive behavior has been proven to negatively impact relationships and social interaction, and ultimately, it has also become a powerful fuel for the commercial sex industry and human trafficking. The End the Demand initiative will train at least 30 community leaders in Michigan to reach a total of at least 2,000 men and teen boys with a message regarding the harmful effects of pornography and the pathway to freedom.
2. INTERCEPT POTENTIAL ONLINE SEX BUYERS
Pimps and purchasers of sex now conduct much of their business online. Patterning ourselves after the early success of the Buyer Beware program in Seattle, the End the Demand initiative will partner with the Michigan State Police and area nonprofits to launch a campaign designed to reach out to those who may be seeking commercial sex through online searches. When users Google certain keywords, our online ads will attempt to redirect them to a website that informs them of the consequences of purchasing sex and offers some additional resources and alternatives.
3. EDUCATE OFFENDERS
The Southwest Detroit Community Justice Center Prostitution Offenders Program (POP) and other treatment programs are for persons that have been convicted of soliciting the services of a prostitute. This program is available as a sentencing tool for local courts, but participants may also choose to enroll without a court order. The program provides information, education, and rehabilitative exercises in order for participants to understand the various causes and negative effects of their actions. The program further assists participants in identifying methods to correct deviant behavior. The End the Demand initiative will work to assist the efforts of this program by providing resources and marketing, as appropriate.
