[Episode 13] September 2, 2020: Uncovering the truth; Wayfair and other potential Human Trafficking conspiracies (Part 1)
with special guests from Polaris, the National Human Trafficking Hotline

Recently the media and social media platforms have been flooded with claims that the popular furniture company, Wayfair, has been involved in a complex scheme involving sex trafficking of children. Unfortunately, this story is not the first sensationalized trafficking-related theory to go viral and it surely won’t be the last. As we know, the widespread sharing of any misinformation (especially on social media) can be a serious barrier when trying to identify actual victims of sex trafficking. It’s time we call upon the experts – the National Human Trafficking Hotline and the FBI – to help uncover the truth behind these claims. Join us for a 2-part series as we learn where these popular theories come from, if they hold any validity, and how we can stay informed on the true indicators of sex trafficking moving forward.

Special Guests:
Stephanie Marroquin (she/her) is a bilingual Case Response Specialist for the Polaris-operated U.S. National Human Trafficking Hotline. Stephanie holds an MA in International Affairs with a concentration in global gender policy and conflict resolution. She has been with the Trafficking Hotline for nearly three years, serving as a bilingual Hotline Advocate and later a Case Response Specialist. As a Case Response Specialist, Stephanie reviews and manages a caseload of human trafficking and exploitation tips, crisis cases, and requests for victim assistance received through the National Hotline. The Case Response team also develops and manages relationships with Hotline partners including law enforcement, service providers, government agencies, and other key stakeholders. Monica Krebs (she/her) is the Case Response Specialist/Corporate Engagement for the Polaris-operated U.S. National Human Trafficking Hotline. Monica holds an MS in Women’s and Gender Studies with a concentration in health and sexuality. She has been with the Trafficking Hotline nearly five years, serving as a Hotline Advocate and Senior Advocate, prior to joining the case response team. In addition to reviewing and responding to complex labor and sex trafficking cases, Monica manages the Trafficking Hotline’s corporate in-kind resources to ensure efficient delivery of critical transportation and housing resources to survivors on behalf of our corporate partners. Last, but not least, Monica is a coordinator for the Trafficking Hotline’s LGBTQIA working group which provides competency training to staff and engages externally to educate stakeholders on labor and sex trafficking within the LGBTQIA community.
