Recently the media and social media platforms have been flooded with claims that the popular furniture company, Wayfair, has been involved in a complex scheme involving sex trafficking of children. Unfortunately, this story is not the first sensationalized trafficking-related theory to go viral and it surely won’t be the last. As we know, the widespread sharing of any misinformation (especially on social media) can be a serious barrier when trying to identify actual victims of sex trafficking. It’s time we call upon the experts – the National Human Trafficking Hotline and the FBI – to help uncover the truth behind these claims.
