Our mission is to uphold a fundamental American principle\, one inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty\, providing safety for those “yearning to breathe free.” In 2012 we became a formal partner in the Northern Tier Anti-Trafficking Consortium servicing victims of human trafficking. Residents came from 28 different countries in 2017. Freedom House’s mission statement reads: \nGuided by our belief that all persons deserve to live free from oppression and to be treated with justice\, compassion and dignity\, we offer a continuum of care and services to our residents as well as to other refugees in need. We advocate for systemic change that more fully recognizes the rights of asylum seekers. \n

Volunteers will go in groups of four to assigned hotels with missing girls flyers\, soap with the human trafficking hotline number\, resources with red flags and additional training items. A group of inspiring individuals moved into the inner city of Pontiac and wanted to make a difference. Over a short period of time this group of selfless individuals discovered that through the following 3 principals; Neighborhood Stabilization\, Fostering Spiritual Growth in the Community\, and Improving Health and Wellness\, significant changes were visibly evident. \nMicah 6 Community\, developed a playground into a garden for healthy food alternatives for the neighborhood. Already this summer they have plans with partners from Leadership Oakland to build a 100 foot long cold frame on the property. Discussions of further additions with what could potentially be first of two small businesses’ on that property: one being a ministry working with individuals exiting out of sex trafficking that would utilize farming as a form therapy.\nHear more of the amazing ways that this group of individuals is contributing to the surrounding community to prevent the vulnerable populations from human trafficking. \n\n\nThe Shelby Township Community Group meets the 2nd Monday of every other month from 7pm to 8:30pm.  \nPlease signup to receive notifications and newsletters about upcoming Voices for Justice events\, or email them at shelby@map-mi.org

Hasn’t humanity progressed? Didn’t we leave slavery dead on the battlefields of the American Civil War? Didn’t social reformers like Lincoln and Wilberforce legislate against such cruelty over a hundred years ago? So we had thought. But\, with over 27 million enslaved people in the world\, human trafficking is once again the battlefront of the century. \nRegardless of nationality\, victims are systematically stripped of their identity\, battered into gruesome submission\, and made to perform humiliating sexual acts on up to 40 strangers every night. The Price of Sugar follows a charismatic Spanish priest\, Father Christopher Hartley\, as he organizes some of this hemisphere’s poorest people\, challenging the powerful interests profiting from their work.
