SUMMARY:*2023 ANNUAL STATEWIDE HUMAN TRAFFICKING SUMMIT* [Hybrid]
DESCRIPTION:2023 ANNUAL STATEWIDE\nHUMAN TRAFFICKING SUMMIT\nBest Practices for Michigan\nThurs\, January 26th\, 2023\n8:30 AM – 2:00 PM\n[Hybrid] Attend Virtually or In-Person\nMSU Management Education Center\n811 W. Square Lake Rd.\, Troy\, MI 48085\nThe Annual Summit brings together advocates from across the state of Michigan who are active in addressing human trafficking through prevention\, education\, law enforcement\, and/or the provision of services to survivors and at-risk populations. The objective of this forum is to increase collaboration and effectiveness across Michigan communities by identifying barriers\, building relationships\, and strengthening partnerships.\n\nPowered by Vista Maria & the Michigan Abolitionist Project (MAP)\nCo-sponsored by the Michigan Human Trafficking Commission\nThis course is approved by the NASW-Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative for 3 CEUs.\nRegistration required – Discounts available for survivors\, law enforcement\, and students! \n \nClick Here to Download the Event Flyer\n\nAGENDA\nThursday\, January 26th\, 2023\n8:30 -2:00 PM (EST)\n\nSession One: Panel Discussion\nGuiding Principles for Those Serving Trafficked Persons in Michigan\nKelly Carter Michigan Human Trafficking Commission\nJeynce Poindexter Ruth Ellis Center\nLt. Wendy K Reyes Oakland County Sheriff’s Department\nRev. Karen Gray-Sheffield Ascension Michigan\nMeredith Reese Vista Maria\nKaren Moore Sanctum House\nDo we really want to help\, and do no harm? If we aren’t carefully assessing the reasons why we provide services the way we do\, and the ways we interact with survivors\, it can be easy to mimic the behavior of traffickers\, even unintentionally. We need to ensure survivors are in the “driver’s seat” by making their own choices\, and feeling supported in those choices.\nThe Michigan Human Trafficking Commission has worked to develop and deploy best practices for those serving victims and survivors of human trafficking and has identified and evaluated the “Guiding Principles for Agencies Serving Survivors of Human Trafficking” resource developed through the U.S. Administration of Children and Families.  This session features a panel of Michigan experts who will explore lessons learned and practical ways to apply and implement these principles.\n\n\nSession Two: Panel Discussion\nIntegrating Survivor Voices in Michigan’s Anti-Trafficking Movement\nLeslie King-Friday Survivor\, Advocate\, Author\nAlice Jay Neighborhood Legal Services\nBrigette Henderson BSW\nPersons with lived experience of human trafficking have a compelling role to play in combating human trafficking effectively throughout the world\, as well as here in Michigan. The anti-trafficking movement needs the leadership of those experts with lived experiences to ensure our work is both survivor-centered and trauma-informed. They are in a unique position to enact change on policy\, organization\, and at individual levels. The voice of those with lived experience must not just be a final stamp of approval on a policy or program\, but rather an integrated part of all stages of our work.\n\nLUNCH: Keynote Speaker\n“New” University of Michigan Human Trafficking Law Clinic & Lab\nBridgette A. Carr University of Michigan\nFor over a decade\, the Clinic relied solely on legal tools and direct representation to fight human trafficking. The Lab\, launched in 2022\, endeavors to create change at policy\, service\, and industry levels through collaborative partnerships across the nonprofit\, corporate\, and governmental sectors. They believe the law is an incomplete\, imperfect solution to reducing exploitation and that interdisciplinary\, cross-industry collaboration is necessary. The vision for the Clinic + Lab partnership is that the work with individual survivors in the Clinic will help ensure the Lab is victim-centered and informed by lived experience.\n\nSession Three: Panel Discussion\nCreating a Standardized Data Reporting Framework for Michigan\nElizabeth Moon-Carter The Salvation Army\nKelly Carter Michigan Human Trafficking Commission\nKris McNeil Measurable Change\nThis interactive session will explore ways data might be used to meaningfully improve services to survivors.  The Michigan Human Trafficking Commission is working to create a standardized data reporting framework specifically for victim services providers with categories for victim typology and services provided.  Once the data set is identified\, the Committee plans to collect data from providers across the state to provide a periodic snapshot of trends in human trafficking victimization and service provision across Michigan.  The data could be a valuable resource\, especially for organizations applying for grants and crafting policy and legislation.\n\n________________________________________ \nNETWORKING:\n\nDuring lunch and scheduled breaks\, in-person attendees will have time to build connections with advocates from across the state\, as well as have the opportunity to meet session panelists and other featured guests by visiting designated vendor tables throughout the conference lobby. \n  \nSpecial thanks to our lunch sponsor!

SUMMARY:A Cup of Hope: Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:A CUP OF HOPE\nWednesday\, October 12th\, at 12 pm \nIntimate Partner Violence:\nWhen Sexual Abuse & Exploitation Collide\n\nRegardless of if you personally know a victim/survivor of human trafficking\, data from the CDC’s National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (2017) indicates that “In the U.S.\, about 1 in 3 women and nearly 1 in 6 men have experienced some form of contact sexual violence during their lifetime.” Unfortunately\, intimate partner violence is much more common than we often think…\nBut have hope! Prevention is possible. We have invited lived-experience expert\, Bobbie Benton\, to share with us the striking similarities between domestic violence and human trafficking\, the key elements that set them apart\, and the myths that often keep sexually violent crimes hidden in the dark. Join us as we take steps towards recognizing abuse and preventing potential exploitation. The resources and tips shared during this webinar may just be the key to saving someone’s life!\n\nFeatured Guest:\nBobbie Benton\, Domestic Violence Survivor & Advocate\nBobbie Benton is an enthusiastic and bright-spirited burst of sunshine\, with a compassionate heart to help others. She is a natural advocate with over 20 years of experience in the human service field working with various populations including adjudicated youth\, young adults transitioning out of the foster care system\, domestic violence survivors\, returning citizens\, individuals with disabilities\, and at-risk youth.\nShe is a domestic violence survivor\, and her experience gave her the courage to step out on faith and become a DV advocate. She uses her experience\, knowledge\, and testimony to empower\, encourage\, and help others in their domestic violence situations. In May 2020\, Bobbie created the Stop Domestic Violence Program at Alternatives for Girls\, this grant-funded initiative exceeded expectations.\nBobbie continues on her Domestic Violence Advocacy journey and started Wenning Touch Advocacy\, a non-profit Domestic Violence and Human Service Advocacy Agency. Bobbie leads with honesty\, integrity\, and empathy and stands in the gap for the vulnerable and underserved through advocacy\, education\, and empowerment\, providing services with a Wenning Touch! Bobbie hones her craft by participating in ongoing training and education related to advocacy and human services\, she also earned her Associate’s Degree in Mental Health and Social work at Oakland Community College\, a Bachelor of Science degree at Rochester College in Counseling and Psychology\, and a certification in Civil Mediation.\n\nVirtual discussion\, LIVE on MAP’s Facebook page\nParticipate in our discussion by submitting questions and feedback in the video comments!\n\nThis series of live-streamed conversations was created in partnership with Hope Against Trafficking in an effort to bring perspective and build awareness on all things human trafficking.\nClick here to view past episode recordings!

SUMMARY:SOAP Up - Detroit Auto Show
DESCRIPTION:SOAP Up – Detroit Auto Show  |  Hotel Outreach Event\nSaturday\, August 27th\, 2022  |  Northridge Church\, Plymouth\nEvent Details\nDid you know that nearly one million people will flood into the metro-Detroit area during the Detroit Auto Show this year? If so\, then you’ll likely know large events like this often lead to an increased demand for commercial sex in the area as well… This is why we need your help!  Join us as we educate local hotel staff about human trafficking and equip them with resources to help identify and report suspected cases of sex trafficking during the week of the Detroit Auto Show (Sep 14-25).\nOn the day of outreach (Aug 27)\, volunteers will help label bars of soap and makeup wipes with the national hotline# and then go out in teams to deliver the materials to over 250 hotels/motels throughout the Metro-Detroit area (labeled soaps and makeup wipes will be distributed to hotel rooms during the week of the Auto Show by hotel staff). While delivering soaps/makeup wipes to assigned hotels\, volunteers will also educate front desk staff on the signs of human trafficking and share local “missing teen posters” that will be used by staff to identify any missing youth/potential victims during the Detroit Auto Show as well.\nNo previous experience necessary – training* (and breakfast) will be provided to volunteers on site! Gather a group of friends\, family members\, or co-workers and register to join us… We need LOTS of participants* (men and women) to help make this outreach event a success!!\n*Training is appropriate for middle school-aged and older. Participants must be 16+ to go to hotels with an adult. \nCLICK HERE TO VIEW THE EVENT FLYER\n Unable to attend but still want to help?  Click the button to make a general donation – or donate a case of soap\, face wipes\, or other outreach supplies needed 😀 Your support is greatly appreciated!\nAgenda\nSaturday\, August 27th\, 2022 (Northridge Church)\n9:30 am  |  Registration & Breakfast\n10 am – 11 am  |  Label soaps & wipes\, make the folders for hotels\n11 am – 12 pm  |  Volunteer Training (basic HT 101\, instructions for visiting hotels\, etc.)\n12:00 pm  |  Drive to hotels to deliver information\, supplies\, and posters (1-2 hours)\nCOVID Restrictions\nWe will be keeping an eye out for what local requirements are for COVID restrictions. If you have not been vaccinated\, we ask that you wear a mask to protect others. We will be socially distancing as much as possible and have hand sanitizers available at the tables.
