SUMMARY:Detroit Community Group
DESCRIPTION:The Detroit Community Group will have its next meeting on \nSaturday\,  April 14th\, 2018  from 2-4:00 pm \nThe Detroit Public Library – Main Branch| 5201 Woodward Ave. | Detroit | 48202. \nThe Detroit Community Group will be viewing the documentary “Nefarious: Merchant of Souls” \n\n“Modern slavery.” It sounds like a paradox. Hasn’t humanity progressed? Didn’t we leave slavery dead on the battlefields of the American Civil War? Didn’t social reformers like Lincoln and Wilberforce legislate against such cruelty over a hundred years ago? So we had thought. But\, with over 27 million enslaved people in the world\, human trafficking is once again the battlefront of the century. \nRegardless of nationality\, victims are systematically stripped of their identity\, battered into gruesome submission\, and made to perform humiliating sexual acts on up to 40 strangers every night. Most are held in dingy apartments and brothels\, forced to take heavy doses of illegal drugs\, and monitored very closely. Victims are often thrown into such ghastly oppression at 13 years old. Some are abducted outright\, while others are lured out of poverty\, romantically seduced\, or sold by their families. \nNefarious: Merchant of Souls is a hard-hitting documentary that exposes the disturbing trends of modern day sex slavery. From the first scene\, Nefarious gives an in-depth look at the human trafficking industry\, showing where slaves are sold (often in developed\, affluent countries)\, where they work\, and where they are confined. With footage shot in over nineteen different countries\, Nefarious exposes the nightmare of sex slavery as experienced by hundreds of thousands daily\, through the eyes of both the enslaved and their traffickers. Nefarious features expert analysis from international humanitarian leaders\, and captures the gripping and triumphant testimonies of survivors in order to galvanize hope and vision. \nFrom initial recruitment to victim liberation—and everything in between—the previously veiled underworld of sex slavery is uncovered in the groundbreaking\, tell-all Nefarious: Merchant of Souls. \nExodus Cry: In response to the sex trafficking crisis\, Nefarious: Merchant of Souls director\, writer\, and producer\, Benjamin Nolot\, founded Exodus Cry\, an international anti-trafficking organization. Exodus Cry is built on a foundation of prayer and is committed to abolishing sex slavery through Christ-centered prevention\, intervention\, and holistic restoration of trafficking victims. Learn more about Exodus Cry at exoduscry.com. \n\nTo receive more information about our Detroit Community Group\, please sign up to receive newsletters and reminders. Contact detroit@map-mi.org for more information. The Detroit group meets monthly.

SUMMARY:Detroit Community Group
DESCRIPTION:The Detroit Community Group will have its next meeting on Saturday\,  March 24th\, 2018  from 2-4:30 pm \nThe Detroit Public Library – Main Branch| 5201 Woodward Ave. | Detroit | 48202. \nThe documentary showing is called “The Price of Sugar” \n\n\nOn the Caribbean island of the Dominican Republic\, tourists flock to pristine beaches\, with little knowledge that a few miles away thousands of dispossessed Haitians are under armed guard on plantations harvesting sugarcane\, most of which ends up in US kitchens. Cutting cane by machete\, they work 14 hour days\, 7 days a week\, frequently without access to decent housing\, electricity\, clean water\, education\, healthcare or adequate nutrition. The Price of Sugar follows a charismatic Spanish priest\, Father Christopher Hartley\, as he organizes some of this hemisphere’s poorest people\, challenging the powerful interests profiting from their work. This film raises key questions about where the products we consume originate\, at what human cost they are produced and ultimately\, where our responsibility lies.\nTo receive more information about our Detroit Community Group\, please sign up to receive newsletters and reminders. Contact detroit@map-mi.org for more information. The Detroit group meets monthly.
