SUMMARY:Empower Conference 2018
DESCRIPTION:empower (verb) – 1. give someone the authority or power to do something; 2. make someone stronger and more confident \nThe Empower conference is an annual MAP event that addresses high-level challenges and opportunities pertaining to human trafficking in Michigan. Empower is designed to equip experts and experienced community advocates who are working towards collaborative solutions. \n\nOur 2018 topic is trauma informed care\, offering specialized training in trauma to improve our response to human trafficking in Michigan. For service providers\, advocates\, outreach organizations\, NGOs and state agency workers. Download Flyer/Agenda \n2018 Empower Agenda & Speakers: \nUnderstanding Trauma and Trauma Informed Care\nDr. Michelle Munro-Kramer Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan School of Nursing–  Dr. Michelle Munro-Kramer’s program of research focuses on trauma\, comprehensive care of vulnerable populations\, and missed opportunities for care within domestic and international contexts. Her research projects approach these topics using a trauma-informed and patient-centered lens. She uses mixed methods and participatory action research to understand the experiences of vulnerable populations in order to inform future intervention development. \nDr. Munro-Kramer is currently adapting and piloting a web-based app focused on healthy relationships and sexual violence using a life skills perspective at the University of Michigan. She is also working on adapting and piloting a primary prevention sexual violence intervention to the University of Cape Coast in Ghana. Her global health field work has included Ethiopia\, Ghana\, Liberia\, and Zambia. \nDr Munro-Kramer’s keynote will address how trauma impacts the brain and body. It will also explore the principles of trauma-informed care that can be applied in interactions with all individuals. \n Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI)\nMaggie Dunn MA\, LLPC of House of Providence – Maggie Dunn & her husband Jason live in Clinton Township with their eight children. Jason is a licensed minister and has led non-profit organizations for nearly two decades. Maggie is a therapist and a woman on a mission to advocate for the orphan. God has placed this dream in their heart to see the community at large rise up and intervene on behalf of the vulnerable foster youth in the state of Michigan. Jason and Maggie have founded the House of Providence in response to the orphan crisis in Michigan. \nThe HOP model is trauma informed and strength based\, and all of the data shows that it is working! \nMaggie presents on the evidence-based treatment approach\, Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI). \n5 Things Survivors Wish You Knew about Their PTSD\nAlice Johnson – Author\, Consultant and Founder of Sister Survivors.  The horrible truth about slavery is not understood and appreciated until told by it’s survivors.
