Community
What is a Community Group?
MAP Community Groups consists of compassionate and motivated citizens who work together to address slavery in their community; they are led and organized by local volunteers. We recognize that we can do more together than we can as individuals or disconnected groups. Through Community Groups we seek to build a collaborative network that help people use their gifts, talents, and resources to more effectively address human trafficking and its root causes
How does it work?
Community Groups meet regularly (usually monthly or quarterly). They conduct awareness activities and engage in service projects in the local community. They provide opportunities for community involvement by developing a presence in the local community focused on addressing slavery and injustice.
Community Group leaders stay connected with MAP staff to stay updated on the anti-human trafficking movement. MAP provides access to resources, assist in developing creative and effective approaches for community engagement and helps foster collaboration between others active in the anti-trafficking movement.
MAP Community Groups are currently active in cities across Michigan such as Ann Arbor, Detroit, Milford/Commerce, Troy, Lake Orion/Oxford, Mid-Michigan, Port Huron, Berrien County, Coldwater, and more! For more information on how to start a community group in your town contact info@map-mi.org
Collaboration
Freedom Coalition
The purpose of the Freedom Coalition is to bring together experienced community advocates that are already engaged in anti-trafficking initiatives in Michigan for a unified and comprehensive approach to addressing human trafficking
Our vision is to eradicate human trafficking in the state of Michigan through collaborative efforts in the areas of demand abatement, survivor support, school outreach, and community awareness and engagement.
Roundtable Summit
This state-wide networking and interactive event is for experienced advocates and professionals who are active in addressing human trafficking in Michigan through prevention, education and/or the provision of services to survivors and at-risk populations. The objective of this forum is to increase collaboration and effectiveness of the Michigan communities by identifying barriers, building relationships, and strengthening our collective capacity.
Michigan Human Trafficking Commission and Local Task Forces
Collaboration is central to successfully addressing human trafficking, but equally as important are the partnerships formed among many community stakeholders. MAP actively supports the work of the Michigan Human Trafficking Commission as well as participates in and/or promotes the work of local Task Forces and Coalitions in our state.
End the Demand
End the Demand is a Michigan Abolitionist Project (MAP) initiative to combat human trafficking by reducing the demand that fuels it. The initiative has three specific objectives: address pornography, intercept potential online sex buyers and educate offenders.
Social Responsibility / Fair trade
In today’s global economy, products are produced both ethically and unethically. Unethical practices include child labor, labor abuse, and slave labor. In order to be a responsible consumer, it is important to choose companies that not only say they care about human rights but who also actively monitor the impact of their purchasing decisions. By supporting businesses who do not tolerate labor abuses or labor trafficking, we promote responsible practices that have positive impact on communities and employ more people in ethical work environments. Fair trade certification ensures compliance to social, environmental and economic standards that work to promote safe, healthy working conditions, protect the environment, enable transparency, and empower communities to build strong, thriving businesses.
Survivor Support
The horrible truth of slavery is not understood and appreciated until told by its survivors. We help connect survivors to resources and services and partner with those who are using their experience to demand change. MAP’s Freedom Coalition regularly provides opportunities to support victims and survivors of human trafficking.
Awareness
Awareness of human trafficking is the first step to eradication modern slavery. MAP is dedicated to bringing the problem to the forefront of public consciousness through education, awareness events, partnerships, and service to our community.
Upcoming Awareness Events
The Abolitionist Program is a digital series that educates and encourages the use of social media to research, learn, and share reliable information. This is a great way for individuals to use their influence to make an impact in the fight to end modern day slavery. This program digs deeper into understanding human trafficking, engages individuals in important conversations, provides hands-on learning and connects a community of Abolitionists all over the state of Michigan!
